READ AND ANSWER

1. Answer each of the following questions in a few sentences:

a. What did Father Wolf teach Mowgli?

Answer: Father wolf taught him the meanings of all the things in the jungle, till he knew the importance of every sound in the jungle.

b. What did Bhaloo teach Mowgli?

Answer: Bhaloo told him that honey and nuts were as good to eat as raw meat.

c. What did Bhageera teach Mowgli?

Answer: Bhagheera taught him how to climb trees. 

d. Why did Mowgli mistrust men?

Answer: Mowgli mistrusted men because Bhagheera had shown him a trap set by humans to capture animals.

e. What did Mother Wolf tell Mowgli?

Answer: Mother Wolf told him that Shere Khan was not a creature to be trusted an Mowgli must kill him some day.

f. Why did the younger wolves become friendly with Shere Khan?

Answer: The younger wolves were friendly with Shere Khan for scraps, from what the tiger left. Akela didn't allow this.

g. What secret did Bhageera share with Mowgli?

Answer: Bhagheera told him that he had been born among men, in  the cages at the king's palace in Udaipur, which was also where his mother had died. He felt he was not a plaything for men and he broke the lock and came away to the jungle.

h. What was Akela not able to kill and why?

Answer: Akela was not able to kill a Sambhar, a kind of a deer because he had become old.

i. Why did Shere Khan tell the young wolves to forget about Akela?

Answer: Shere Khan told the wolves to forget about Akela, because Akela would soon die. He asked for Mowgli and threatened to hunt in their jungle and not give them a single bone.

j. How did Mowgli frighten the Pack?

Answer: Mowgli frigtened the pack by the fire in the pot on the ground. He lit a big crackling fire by shoving a dead branch into it. This scared the wolves who cowered in fear.


2. Read the quotes and tick the best explanations. 

a. 'Every little fish jumping in the pond meant just as much to him as the work of his office means to a businessman."

  1.  For Mowgli everything little sound in the forest had a meaning as every piece of information is important for a businessman.
  2. Just as a good businessman must know everything about his office and how much or how little his workers are working, each creature has to know what is happening in the forest to keep itself safe as well as well-fed. 
  3.  Every sound and action made by the creatures in the forest was important for Mowgli as is every activity in a businessman's office is good for his business.
  4. A good business man keeps his eyes and ears open to know what is happening in his office if he is to do well in his business as an animal keeps an eye on whatever is happening in the forest.

b. 'The others they hate you because their eyes cannot meet yours, because you are wise, because you have pulled out thorns from their feet-because you are a man.'

  1. Mowgli was a human being and wolves are afraid of humans. When Mowgli stared hard into the eyes of a wolf, it couldn't keep looking at him and looked down. 
  2. Wolves, like other animals are so afraid that they don't look into the eyes of a human being. They realise that man is the most intelligent living being.
  3.  A wolf was too afraid to keep looking into Mowgli's eyes, so it would look down.
  4.  If Mowgli kept looking into the eyes of a wolf, it had to look down as animals are afraid of human beings.

c. 'Because I was all but your brother in blood, I promise that when I am a man among men I will not betray you to men as you have betrayed me.'

  1. Mowgli said that he had been like their brother, but now they had let him down by wanting to kill him. 
  2. Mowgli said that he knew he was not an animal. He promised that he would not be disloyal to them, kill them or let them be killed by other humans even though the animals had wanted to kill him.
  3. Mowgli said he'd grown up with the animals as their brother though he was a human being. He said he would not be disloyal to them once he was living with human beings. He would protect them from men even though they had been disloyal to him.
  4. Mowgli told the pack that though he had grown up with them, he was not an animal. He promised he would not kill them as them as they were planning to kill him. He would forgive them.

d. 'He had been brought into the Pack at the price of a bull's life."

  1. Shere Khan had been allowed to break the law of the jungle and take the life of a bull if he spared Mowgli.
  2. A bull had been given to Shere Khan in place of the man-cub, Mowgli. 
  3. Shere Khan was forced to eat a bull from the village as the wolf family refused to give Mowgli, the man-cub to him. 
  4. Shere Khan was lame and couldn't catch his prey, so he had either to eat a bull or Mowgli. The wolf family kept Mowgli so Shere Khan had to eat a bull.

e. The tears ran down his face. 'What is it? What is it?' he said. 'I do not wish to leave the jungle, and I do not know what this is. Am I dying, Bhagheera?'

  1. Mowgli started crying and thought that he was dying.
  2. For Mowgli, crying was a new experience, so he asked Bhageera if this meant that he was dying.
  3. Men feel sorrow and cry. The thought of leaving the creatures made Mowgli sad and he cried. This was a new feeling for him and he thought he was dying. 
  4. Mowgli had become a man and was thinking like a man.
